Clergy Trauma Training Project Timeline
July, 1999: Initial conversations between Rev. Jackson Day, Executive Director of the National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers and Esther Giller, Executive Director of the Sidran Traumatic Stress Institute about possibility of adapting the new Risking Connection curriculum for clergy.
August, 1999 - December, 1999: Jackson Day engages in intensive search for funding sources
August - September 1999: Constitutency Development: Identification and contact with persons and agencies already involved in some fashion with clergy and trauma to determine if project would be viable. An informal survey of activities currently taking place was conducted. Many of the institutions contacted are among resources listed in Church and Trauma links. Grant applications prepared and submitted.
December, 1999: Project Planning Grant awarded to NCVNVM by E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
January, 2000: Project Concept Paper produced
July 8, 2000: Brainstorming meeting, Towson, MD. NCVNVM sponsors all-day meeting of clergy, consumers and clinicians at Sidran's new offices in Towson, Maryland to identify issues, concerns, and possibilities inherent in the clergy trauma training project.
July 2000: Global Email Discussion and Reaction Group formed after the July 8 meeting; group was subsequently expanded.
October 11, 2000: Presentation of Risking Connecteion approach at NCVNVM Annual Meeting by Laurie Pearlman, Ph. D. Panel by Pearlman and Jonathan Shay, M. D. on topic of "what I wish faith communities would be doing with my clients, while they're in treatment with me. All participating NCVNVM members and guests provided with copies of Risking Connection to familiarize NCVNVM members with conceptual basis of project.
December, 2000 - August 2001. Interfaith Clergy Advisory Group met in Baltimore, Maryland, to discuss issues related to curriculum development..
April, 2001: Presentation at American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Atlanta, Georgia
May, 2001: "Quick Clergy Survey" is conducted to assess familiarity of a cross section of clergy with trauma survivors and ministry with them.
June, 2001: Project Implementation Grant awarded to Sidran Traumatic Stress Institute by E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
October 14, 2001: United Methodist General Board of Church and Society passes resolution promoting trauma education for clergy and endorsing this project.
November, 2001 Faculty of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C. approve inclusion of a 2 semester hour graduate level course, PC 229 Pastoral Care of Trauma Survivors in the Congregation in the 2002 Summer School Curriculum. The proposed course is based on the Clergy Trauma Training Project curriculum. Instructors will be Jackson Day and Elizabeth Vermilyea. The course will meet every evening from 6:30 to 9:30 for two weeks starting July 22, 2002
December, 2001: Poster Session at International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies , New Orleans outlines Clergy Trauma Training Project for the benefit of clinicians and researchers attending this meeting.
January - July, 2002. Intensive Curriculum writing by four authors.
July 22, 2002 - August 2, 2002, from 6:30 - 9:30 PM, at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C. Rev. Jackson Day and Elizabeth Vermilyea taught graduate-level seminary course, PC 229 Pastoral Care of Trauma Survivors in the Congregation based on the Clergy Trauma Training Project curriculum.
September 2002 - July 2003. Significant re-writing and revision of the curriculum.
August - November 2003. Review of the draft curriculum by outside reviewers.
December 2003 - October 2005. Additional re-working and revision of the curriculum to address the issues of outside reviewers.
February 2006. Publication of Risking Connection in Faith Communitiese: A Training Curriculum for Faith Leaders Supporting Survivors of Interpersonal Trauma
