Altar on an Armored Personnel Carrier

Photographer: Bruce Chaffee, Chaplain's Assistant, January, 1969

In December, 1968, Chaplain Jackson Day, currently NCVNVM treasurer, was assigned to the First Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam's Central Highlands. Occasionally he would be called on to conduct a service for other units. This picture was taken on a visit to the 2d Batallion, 8th Infantry (Mechanized), a unit of the Second Brigade. The First Brigade units were not mechanized, and tended toward mountaintop firebases, while mechanized units were assigned to flatter terrain. On this visit it had been raining and there wasn't much dry area to set up an altar. The front of an APC proved quite satisfactory.
